The 6-day Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic climbs, combining rainforest trails, dramatic ridgelines, high alpine camps, and a rewarding summit approach. It is a strong option for trekkers who want a challenging mountain experience with varied landscapes and excellent views.
Often called the Whiskey Route, Machame is known for its beautiful approach and demanding profile. Over six days, the route moves from dense forest into moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic summit zone. This version is shorter than the 7-day variation, so good fitness and a steady pace are especially important.
Our mountain team supports you throughout the climb with experienced guides, well-planned camp logistics, and close attention to safety and acclimatization. Each stage is structured to keep the journey realistic, memorable, and focused on reaching Uhuru Peak with confidence.
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Later, meet your guide for a full trek briefing, gear check, and final preparation for the climb.
Drive to Machame Gate for registration and begin the climb through lush montane rainforest. The trail is rich with birdlife, moss-covered trees, and changing forest scenery as you ascend to Machame Camp.
Continue above the forest into open heath and moorland. The trail becomes steeper and the views open dramatically toward Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau before reaching camp.
This is the key acclimatization day. You climb high toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp, helping your body adapt to altitude while crossing some of the route's most dramatic scenery.
Climb the Barranco Wall, then continue over ridges and valleys to Karanga before the final push to Barafu Camp. The higher altitude is felt more strongly here, so the pace remains slow and controlled.
Shortly after midnight, begin the summit ascent toward Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak. After sunrise at the summit, descend carefully back through Barafu and continue down to Mweka Camp for your final mountain overnight.
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where summit certificates are issued. After celebrating with the team, transfer back to Moshi for a well-earned rest.
